Meet your tutor - Carrie
Art is such an important part of my life and I love to share that with others.
I like to create a warm, friendly creative environment where my students feel completely at ease. I want my students to feel proud of what they create and to experiment and have fun. I encourage students to find their own inspiration and guide them on their own art journey.
I love that moment in the classroom where students are about to put their first woodcut through the press – It’s such a fun experience to see their face when they turn over the paper and see their print for the first time!!
My own (formal) art journey began at the Dunedin School of Fine Arts where I majored in Printmaking.
This was an amazing experience where my art practice involved Woodcuts, Screen printing and Etching. I also exhibited in various group and solo shows.
Once I had completed my degree, I ventured up to Christchurch where I studied at the Canterbury Teachers College and trained to become a high school Art Teacher.
This gave me the insight into how to share the Art world with others and once we had started a family, I taught from my studio to Home Schooling families. I developed art lessons for each year group and taught students from the age of 5 up to 16.
I then began teaching at local community education centre ‘Risingholm’. These were beginner printmaking classes for adults and ran one night a week.
In more recent years, I have been teaching evening classes at Hagley Community College (After3 Classes). Printmaking and Mixed Media classes which catered for complete beginners thru to advanced. I really enjoyed these classes with such a range of ability and personalities – I always came home ‘buzzing’ about what my students had been creating.
During the past 10 years I have also been working at an art supply store where I have really honed my art material knowledge. This has proven to be a great asset to my teaching and I love to pass on my insight into different materials that students may not have seen or known how to use.
In recent years I have been teaching Printmaking from my home studio. Now I have moved to an exciting new shared studio space! 27 Essex St will enable larger groups to share the Printmaking adventure - I can't wait to see what is created here!
